Our speaker today was Taffy Davis, wife of member Buzz, who spoke regarding a project for which she shows great passion, the Farmington Historical Society's fund raising effort to repair and preserve the North Church.  This wonderful building in-town  Farmington is on the National Registry.  Catch this and other details about our meeting........

Today dawned bright and sunny on our meeting.  It is hard not to look forward to the alarm clock on meeting days!

Guests:  Mathew Baily, Janet Kennedy and Cathy Ibarguen (a surprise for Doug to see her enter!)  Make-ups were reported for David Gustafson, Sherman Anderson, Doug Ibarguen, Kent Wiles and Joan Patterson.  Happy birthday to Steve Bracy, Walter Gooley (who said "Not bad for 92!"), and Doug Ibarguen.  Katie led a rousing round of Happy Birthday.  Ellen Curtis celebrates her Anniversary this week.

The donations this week once again go to the SAVES program.  Al reports they are considering May donations to go to a project in Alaska.  Joan, who spent many weeks there, will have some great ideas and we will know next week.

Community Service Awards:  Get nominations in soon!  They can be sent to  Mike Mansir, Bill Marceau or Carol Timberlake.  An organizational meeting was held directly after the meeting.

Chartering Night:  The Interact Club held a successful Chartering night on the 25th.  Thanks to those Rotarians who attended and to Pam West for the chocolate Rotary wheels given to the members.  Parents had many positive comments.

Rockland Club:  Clayton attended and told us about a bicycle coalition of Maine 5th Annual Lobster Ride and Roll in July.  See Clayton for more information.

Centennial Park:  The benches are still in place so go on down and enjoy this beautiful place.  A work day will be planned in a few weeks.

July 4th:  Carolyn is looking for ideas for the parade theme.  An organizational meeting will be held next week.  If you want to join the committee, see Carolyn.

Rotary Minute:  Paul Mills gave a great Rotary minute when he spoke of a world leader who addressed the Farmington Rotary Club.  It was Alexander Korenski, the only Democratic leader of Russia who served for 6-8 months in 1917.  He later fled to the US in 1947.  The Rotary Club and Farminton State Teachers College joined to get him to Farmington and the Club paid him $100 to present on October 27, 1947.  He was the only known speaker to carry a loaded gun while addressing the club as he must be forever aware that there was a bounty on his head.

New Member:  Joey Bolduc was inducted into the Club by Frank.  As usual Frank handled this with such finesse.  Joey is a cabinet and furniture maker who was raised locally and came back home.  Frank spoke of the growth of the club over the years and the increased fund raising and community involvement as a result.  Congratulations and Welcome Joey!

Breakfast raffle was won by Walter and Alison lost her chance at the $258.50 pot.

Happy dollars:  Pam West gave three to thank Pauline for the effort on the Interact Club, to congratulate Joey Bolduc and to talk about the Rotary Club's part in the Relay for Life.  This year the Club will be called the RAT Pack (Rotary Action Team).  The event is June 2-3 and will start Friday night at 6 PM.  Dan announced that Bowdoin College has selected WA Mitchell as their exclusive provider of chairs...how cool it that!  Fred told us of his trip to Portland to hear George Mitchell speak and joined him for a photo.  Ivan spoke of a clinic being held tonight on turkey hunting.  He also hopes that while he is away the Red Sox hold their 1st place.  Joyce was happy to have a visit from grandchildren and thanked Al for acting as Secretary last week.  Al celebrated Doug's return, the Interact Club and , oh, I forgot the third, was it about Taffy Davis in the paper?  Sorry.......   Frank announced an event on May 14 at Titcomb Mountain from 1:30-4:30; an afternoon of music from several great groups.  Celebrate Mother's Day by taking her to this great and enjoyable event.  Cathy Ibarguen recognized her husband's 59th!

Speaker:  Taffy Davis, who moved here 17 years ago was the guest speaker.  Her recent article in the paper was a tribute to the work being done by the Historical Society.  Taffy has worked at Franklin Memorial Hospital as a Nurse Manager as well as in other capacities for 19 years.  Taffy has been involved with the Historical Society and has a keen interest in the project of restoration of the North Church.  Since the Historical Society started in 1961 it found its home in the North Church in 1971, the Red School House for the Farmington/Wilton Historical Society and then on to the Titcomb House in the late 80's or early 90's.  The North Church has been closed for several years as a blocked aquaduct in town caused a lot of damage to the Church.  It was a Unitarian Church about 1830 with local names such as Abbot, Belcher, Tarbox, Austin and McCleary involved.  In 1804 it was a local meeting house but later burned.  In 1883 it was rebuilt.  The Women's Alliance held May Basket fundraisers annually to pay for the maintenance.  The Rotary Club met there for many years and records show the 35th Anniversary of the Club was celebrated there in 1961 with 17 past presidents attending.  She showed a Rotary Song Book from 1949 found in the building........ouch, PLEASE don't give it back!  A fund raising effort is underway to create a local history center.  Architect Dan Augustin is working with the group on plans.  The upstairs is basically untouched and is in beautiful condition and authentic from 1883 which includes a beautiful organ.  It will need a new foundation and 1st floor bathroom, as well as floors, heating and cooling systems, insulation, wiring, plumbing, etc.  Their Christmas Wreath sale was a successful effort and they have a lot planned for the capital campaign.  They are also seeking some grant funding.  A total of $400,000 is needed.  Thanks Taffy for a wonderful and informative presentation.
