Message from DG Steve Johnson:
Call to District's Club
July, 2013
I was hoping to start off the year with smooth sailing but as is often the case, life got in the way. As I’m sure most of you are aware, the town of Lac Megantic in Quebec was the scene of a horrific accident this past Saturday night involving a fuel train that exploded in the heart of town destroying the downtown and resulting in the death of 5 (as of this date) and the missing of over 40 residents.
Lac Megantic is an town that is located close to the Maine border near Coburn Gore and it had a Rotary Club in our District for many years (until 1999). It is Farmington’s Sister City and is close to clubs in Zone 13 of our district. In response to this tragedy and in the spirit of ImageRotary service, District 7790 has formed a Lac Megantic Relief Task Force to coordinate Rotary support to the residents impacted by the accident. PDG Jean-Hugues Laflamme has graciously agreed to Chair this task force and he will be the District’s representative to the authorities in Lac Megantic and the greater Rotary world. I have been contacted by members of my District Governor class offering support from their districts and I will be putting them in contact with Jean-Hugues.
Should your club wish to support our efforts, I’m sure that support will be greatly appreciated. We will be establishing a funding mechanism and developing ways in which we can reach out to Rotarians in other Districts to help support our efforts. More news on this will be forthcoming
Thank you for bringing this effort to the attention of your clubs and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Steve Johnson, DG
