On Thursday, May 25th, the Farmington Rotary Club met for a very special dinner at The Granary.  The event:  The Eighth Annual Community Service Awards Banquet.  We Rotarians gathered to honor people in our the midst of our communities that make it possible for others to have occupation and other special services.

It was a most amazing time for me, as a relative newcomer to the area, I am not familiar with the people and places that have become everyday for those who hail from Franklin County.  The meal was delicious, thanks to the great planning of Carol Timberlake and her crew and the Chef of the Granary. Following the meal, it was also truly delicious to hear the joyful Smith Brothers play for our pleasure on the fiddle and guitar.  My husband and I were lucky enough to sit directly in front of the extended family members of Jay and Shane and it was oh, so delightful to hear them tapping their feet and making proud comments.  The pair most certainly dazzled us!  And then they were quite surprised to discover that they were the recipients of the Rising Star Award.  Paul Mills ushered them into the hall of fame to join many others who have achieved notariety after having received this illustrious award.

Then came another surprise:  Glenn Kapiloff was amazed to find out that he was to be honored with a very special award.  David Gustafson explained to us that when Glenn was sent to Iraq, he had most graciously volunteered to write an article for the Franklin Journal so that people back home could have a better idea of what it was like in this most difficult war.  Glenn illuminated the lives of others in Iraq for us in such a way as to allow us to see them as ordinary people caught in the stife and grateful for the aid of Americans.  For this, we take our hats off to Glenn; and he was offered a free membership in the American Legion for a bonus!  Thanks, Glenn!

Our own Doug shared about Rotary so that those who were unfamiliar would have more information about what it is that we do.  Even for those of us who are members, it was pretty exciting to hear all of the projects that we have supported in just the year 2005.  It was honorable, indeed, and humbling at the same time.

The Tranten Family of Kingfield shared the Entrepreneur award for the three businesses that they share in Kingfield and the nearly 50  people that they employ.  A wonderful story written by Fred O. Smith was passed out as a supplement to Spokes; the Tranten's have a long history of serving their community and rightful deserve the honor of being the recipients of the Eighth Annual Rotary Entrepreneur Award.

Richard Forster was the winner of the Eighth Annual Senior Vocational Award, and he was quite taken by surprise!  He has supported the community through various means since coming to Maine from NewYork; He is a strong member of the Farmington Ski Club and had served as President of the club on more than one occasion.  His contributions to Titcomb Ski Area have been exemplary and he more than deserves the honor of this award.  Congratulations!

In all, it was a most wonderful dinner and one that will not be forgotten.  Thanks to Carol and crew for this event!  Delightfully, susy sandersÂ
